PTO belt keeps burning or coming off

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full

I got this mower used in 2011. From 2011 to 2018, I used this mower to low about 5 acres once a week with no problems whatsoever.

Over the winter of 2017/2018, the mower wouldn't start so I took it to the dealer in the spring of 2018. I got it back and it was fine until about the 2nd time I mowed when the belt broke. First time the belt had been replaced in all those years. I went to the dealer and bought a new belt for $130 and changed it myself....(I'm a woman who has no mechanical experience).

I finally got the belt on and started to mow and about halfway through mowing...the belt broke again. I didn't even get to finish mowing. I was ticked and couldn't afford another belt at that Priya. I looked online and found the same model number belt on eBay for $15.

I ordered two. During the summer of 2018, I had to replace the belt 6 times. I won't take it back to the dealer because they are notorious for screwing people over. They almost ruined my Mahindra tractor because they didn't put any coolant back in the radiator after draining it.

Now it's time to mow again and my PTO belt keeps popping off to where it will come out of the pulley that sits behind the belt clutch and then off the tensioner pulley. I'll put it back on and make about 10 or 15 passes and off it comes again. I've called it every name in the book and probably a few words I've invented. I don't know how to fix this.

I'm putting the belt on right. The pulleys are not bent or dirty. All pulleys turn freely except for the one behind the belt clutch. That one won't budge when the mower is off.

Could the clutch be going out? Also, when I put the mower in reverse, the blades will dig into the ground. I have it set on a 4" cut. I'm kind of ignorant on what the parts are called so if you reply...act like you're talking to an idiot and explain it that way.

Lol. Thanks in advance

Check the pulley tensioner arm. It’s supposed to move back and forth.

Mine was froze and kept breaking my belt. It helps to take stress off the belt when going in deeper grass type deal

I have owned a 930D grasshopper since 2007 and have had nothing but problems. It continually gets hot. Also I have had to put three clutches on it. Now it is cutting out all the time.

I tighten up the belt seemed to help a little bit. Do not have much room left to adjust belt.

I wondering if I need to replace the pto belts. I replaced then to years ago. Seems like everytime you get into tall grass it slows down. Just will not keep up.

If you have any Ideas please contact me. 816-309-**** DB,

have used to mow since 2000 with minimal issues. when issues developed contacted grasshopper by email and the next day received a call asking what they could do to help. I had a problem with a drive unit and since I am an automotive tech he sent me the diagrams I needed and arranged to get me the parts at a dealer close by. probably be the last mower I will ever need. just plan on keeping it up and mowing grass

Grasshopper Mower - 325d’s a happy customer here - Image 2

My grandfather bought 2 120s originally when he started this buisness then moved to 2 220s and then a 223 and then another 223 and now I own the buisness and have bought 2 325ds to conserve on fuel as I mow a huge cemtery and 35 yard a week. I put 350-400 hours a year on these and I’m absolutely happy with these machines cause grasshopper has the best warranty out there in my eyes I mean when using these machines commercially things are gunna break ect here and there people I feel need to be more understanding I had a fuel tank burst and grasshopper cover it under warranty cause the fuel cap wasn’t venting the right way.

Had 2 pulleys replace on same machine and some bolts replaced and the machine has 760 hours on it and it’s will be 2 years old middle of this October next month. My other machine haven’t had any issue outside the drive pulley and belt snap prematurely but that almost has 300 hours on it and was boughten in April this year 2018.

If I had to complain about anything it’d be the stripping kit on the machines and that grasshoppers needs to make a stand up cause I will be buying another mower next spring and it has to be a stand up and I wish grasshopper would make that.. but all in all I’m extremely pleased with my grasshoppers and my grandpa was too when he owned the buisness

226V Briggs Sump leaking badly at 80 hours

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full

I bought my Grasshopper 226V 5 years ago. It is only used to cut my personal lawn, so as of today, it only had 82 hours on it.

A month or two ago I began to notice the oil level was just a bit low each time I started to mow. I would add oil to the full level. Finally, oil began leaking badly out of the bottom of the engine. Took it to the dealer where I purchased it.

Turns out the entire sump was bad (had warping, etc). As I researched this, I found it was a common problem. I asked the dealer if I might expect this to happen again. He told me they had redesigned the sump, have new specs for torque on the bolts, etc.

In other words, Briggs KNOWS this is a manufacturer defect (otherwise they wouldn’t have redesigned the part). So, to have this replaced, it cost me $567. I am not happy at all. Again, the mower only had 80 hours on it!

If this had been purchased by a landscaper, they would have put 80 hours on it in just a month or two. Grasshopper should stand behind their mowers and reimburse me for this repair.

While I realize this is an issue with a Briggs engine, the Grasshopper company made the decision to use this engine in their mowers. The customer shouldn’t have to carry the burden of a known problem such as this.

Is there a permanently repaired for oil leak on the Briggs and Stratton 26hp engines. Just spent $1300.00 to repaired oil leak.

Only to get mower back and have a more severe leak than before. Sad part, used mower just one time.

Mower only used to cut my resident yard only. This is the only time this mover has ever been in for repair. And it took nearly six weeks to repaired.

I am having the same problem! I have 200 hours in this my 9th season with my Grasshopper POS!

It has been in the shop for 3 years in a row now for leaking oil. My dealer no longer carries this brand due to the finger pointing of the 2 separate companies.

Today I am told that it needs a new engine, exhaust and pulls as the Grasshopper design won’t allow the engine to be pulled without totally destroying it. Will NEVER purchase or recommend Briggs & Stratton or grasshopper as long as I may live!

Yes, and was given the same answer “sorry, your mower is more than 5 years old. It doesn’t matter about the hours on the engine / mower.”

Grasshopper and B&S both told me over the phone they would not help me. Even with only 80 hours on the engine.

I literally begged them to help me out and they said since the warranty period had run out, I was on my own.

BOTH companies were a complete let down. I guarantee you 20 years ago, Briggs would have never left a customer hanging.

HP2 Tandem Pump continuously goes bad

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full

GrassHopper Model 721DT Mower

Parker Hydrostatic pump went bad a 300 hrs from new,

rebuilt, trans and at additional 200 hrs went bad again.

Almost impossible to get parts. The distributors want to

sell you a whole transmission for $2000.00 and swap it out,

they do not have Hydrostatic pump rebuild training from Parker.

You cannot get these parts anywhere except from Parker and they have a monopoly so they can upcharge drastically for minor parts.

After a dozen Grasshoppers, will never buy on again.

You have to get a hold of Parker and beg them to sell you the parts so you can repair your own mower. But beware, they will try to hook you up with a distributor who has no idea on how a Hydrostatic pump works and you have to explain to them what part you need. Sad. Nowhere can you order parts online.

Being gouged on price or not even being able to buy parts is a show-stopper for me. I want to pick up the phone or go the website, place an order, and have the parts delivered to my front door.

I have no desire to work with a dealership or get "stink-eye" from the counter help when I ask for parts to do my own repairs. I refuse to reward this kind of business.

Generally speaking, the transmission components we get from Parker are serviceable and rebuildable. These components/systems are not usually swapped out whole unless there is a major issue.

And, for what it's worth...we also use Hydro-Gear transmissions and components. Parker doesn't have a monopoly, so that must just be the OP's way of venting about not being able to purchase parts direct from Parker...

Radiator blowing and causing 2 degree burns

My parents have a 725 diesel that is getting up there in hours. (Around 4000) it has been maintained very well over the years.

The young man who works for them came yesterday to mow. The radiator blew and caused 1st and 2nd degree burns on the back of his legs and bottom side. The way this mower is built, provides no saftey between the seat and the radiator for accidents like this. The plate that is in place behind the seat has holes in it.

The radiator cracked in a straight line even with where a person sits on the seat. I wouldn't want another person getting hurt due to this happening again. Also, if no safety guards are in place for this why would the radiator be placed in this position?

The burns caused a hospital stay overnight, along with continued care of the burns in the future. This is so upsetting and I hope no other person gets hurt from the lack of saftey precautions put on this lawn mower.

Put a new pulsating line from crankcase (pulley side ) to fuel pump. and put a heat shield on the line as it sits too close to muffler and it burns the line. There is a kohler bulletin on this but kohler didn't seem to send it out since it only applied to Grasshopper mowers.

reply icon Replying to comment of Nainoa Vmt

This would be a possible solution if the engine is a Kohler. But, it sounds like the OP is doing the right thing by working with dealer to address.

Engine issues are the purview of the engine manufacturer.

As for Russell H's comment...his main issue was also an engine issue that eluded even a factory-trained Kohler technician for months. Eventually diagnosed and addressed.

Russell, you missed the fact that we commented on this review back on March 2, 2018...and that the issue was resolved to the customer's satisfaction. Now, he doesn't come back and say that here, but that's what happened.

As to your particular issue (ref. May 19, 2023 review and previous ones)...Trying to leverage the "credibility" of reviews and comments on this site is going to get you a different result or response from Grasshopper about your particular mower.

It's not that we don't care, we do; if we didn't, we wouldn't take the time to post responses here or even care that this site exists...Kohler is where the buck stops for an issue with a Kohler engine. It's that simple, even if it's hard to hear.

It’s your mower why the *** would they have to contact anyone outside when yall GRASSHOPPER built it with that part. If you can’t fix it don’t throw it in your mower.

God knows all the felons an good ol boys yall got workin in there can’t fix a god damn thing. They can barely assemble the damn mowers with instructions.

Brandon the plant supervisor is about as useless as they come too an he’s a real *** head. They’d rather employ people they can pay 14-16 dollars an hour instead of people who actually know what they are doing.

DO NOT LIKE MOWER. Not made for women!

I am 5’7” woman. After trying to decide which mower to replace my 54” zero turn mower, finally decided on Grasshopper.

Got it home, mowed 30 minutes with it, parked it and got my son’s 42” mower out. I mow 4 acres. Told the sales rep I had had 3 shoulder surgeries and did not like handles when I bought it. He assured me if I spent another $139 for 2” longer handles it would resolve problems.

They got here and just made it worse. Called Grasshopper and they had rep call me. Sent different handles and new adjustable seat and had dealer put them on. Now my feet won’t touch platform and I hurt when I mow because they are bouncing around.

Called rep and asked if there was any way I could return it. It now has less than 15 hours on it. He said he didn’t think so. If you’re a woman don’t buy Grasshopper.

Apparently only men can operate this machine.

Ugh!!! Now I’m stuck with a mower I’ll have to pay a man to mow with.

@OrganicWaterDragon...We've spoken with both our factory representative in your area, your local retailing/servicing dealer and the customer service representative here at our factory. From all the information we can gather, including your comments above, we have attempted over the past few weeks to satisfy your requests and solve the issues you are experiencing.A return may have been possible shortly after your purchase, however, an unauthorized, non-Grasshopper dealer attempted modifications to the original levers -- bending the taller levers back and grinding off of portions of the metal fenders to allow the reconfigured levers to lock in a neutral position.

These unapproved modifications altered the machine such that a return was not possible.Even after this, your Grasshopper dealer installed several additional items to help alleviate your shoulder issues, including a sliding seat with foldable armrests and taller QuikAjust Tilt levers with a 9" adjustment range. They also installed optional LED lights...these items were provided at no charge to you (over a $600 retail value).

There are also ways to raise the platform so your feet can rest on it, but at this time, further offers on the dealer's part to make those adjustments have been refused.Grasshopper mowers have been in production since the late 1960s, and since that time, we have heard, and continue to hear, from literally thousands of women across the county who are more than satisfied with comfort, operation and ease of use of our mowers. We are still happy to work with you to meet your needs and add your voice to those other satisfied customers'.

I bought a used 430d with approx 2000 hrs. It ran hot in the summer so I started running it a few hundred rpms under max and that worked okay.

I changed to synthetic oil and can mow at full rpms until temps get over 100 degrees.

I also have to make sure the radiator and screen are clear. It is still the strongest mower I've seen.

Overheating is caused by blockages in the radiator and/or low coolant levels. We highly recommend cleaning the radiator after EVERY use.

We have a low-pressure cleaning wand that attached to a garden hose that is an excellent option. Also, keep a close eye on your coolant levels and add coolant as needed.

Refer to the engine manual for specifications and procedures. Always go by what is in the manual versus what you read online!
