Grasshopper Mower
Reviews and Complaints
Can't get parts
We have needed a clutch Spacer for more than a week . It's a small Spacer and no one can get it from grasshopper due to many reasons excuses from them.
We are small company, invested alot of money we thought in a great product so we would not have issues with mowing our clients and running a good company with no reason not to mow. We'll, not getting parts from manufacturer has cost us our entire business...Grasshopper forgets the small stuff like a Spacer that has stopped a company dead in its tracks.....never again invest in grasshopper.

Ive owned my 226v for five years. I have 103 hours of service since I only mow my lawn.
The 26 hp Briggs and Stratton engine stopped running abruptly and sounded like it threw a rod. No busted oil pan but when it was taken apart, I was right. Two broken rods. Waiting to hear about the repair cost.
Totally disgusted.
Ive probably owned 50 Briggs and Stratton engines and this is a first. Of course, it would be the most expensive and should have been the longest lasting.
My dealer is doing all he can but Briggs and Stratton isnt helping
- Solid deck and frame
- Briggs and stratton motor

Improving the grass hopper mower main drive belt longevity
Hi,
I have a D725 diesel grasshopper zero turn mower purchased in 2012.
There were two items that I addressed that drastically improved the longevity of the main drive belt.
One; the idler tension pulley that was “ slamming” against tge frame that was causing the belt to actually break. And, the guard bracket/rod, that caused excessive wear and prematurely were out the main drive belt.
I “ Added” a “ STOP” bracket that “ PREVENTED” the idler pulley from hitting the frame , thus stopping the pulley from “ Turning” and breaking the belt.
The other thing I did was to “ Remove” the rod/bracket, that was installed by the factory to “ Keep” the belt from straying off it’s path, but instead of doing that, it actually caused the belt to rub and wear out prematurely, my fix was to totally remove this rod/bracket,
These teo fixes have “ GEEATLY” added much longevity to the belt life to the main drive belt.

8000 dollar piece of junk the most headache I have ever had I'm considering cutting it up and putting it in the dumpster

Poor quality and design.
I have a front deck 725D power fold deck Grasshopper.
Bought new in September, 2017.
At 189 use hours the power fold electric actuator failed and was replaced under warranty.
At 210 use hours the replacement actuator failed for a net of only 21 hours on the replacement.
Now I have to trailer the lawnmower 35 miles to the dealer for a 3rd actuator.
Time to check the design and placement of these actuators.
User's recommendation: Grasshopper makes good mowers, just avoid the front deck power fold models.
Overheating
grasshopper 72D, cleaned radiator filter and radiator, checked belts and fluids, after 20 to 30 minutes I stopped the mower, idled down, disengaged the blades to move some debris, engaged the blades or so I thought, went about 20ft.and noticed the blades weren't cutting and the temperature light was on. I parked the mower, turned it off.
Started the mower and pulled the handles together and the mower died, checked radiator and it was not hot. belts are on and turning, I give up, can't even put mower up

Too many problems
Continually having the clutch cut out and quit mowing. Have to stop and move deck up and down to get sensor back in line where clutch will engage and mow.
There is not enough tension to hold sensor down where it will not stop the clutch. Undercarriage parts continually breaking as well as pillow blocks giving problems. All of this is on a 722D with front deck. It is a.long way off to a Grasshopper dealer and the repair wait times are not good at all.
I am buying a backup mower where I don't have to go through the agony when in shop. For what a replacement for a 722D would cost I can buy several good zero turns in its place.
User's recommendation: Look around
Best mower I have ever had.

199* 725G2 model has been great!
Re-engineering of deck. To have less grass sticking to it.
This is my second Grasshopper 0 turn, and on both of them whether wet or dry grass, the grass sticks to the deck after every cutting so bad that high pressure water and a scraping deviice must be used. Even though I have a tilt deck
, it is not easy to clean. Ithink it needs some re-engineering.

I simply LOVE my 226V
In 2014 I bought a Grasshopper 226V that was a year old. I bought it from a dealer that used it as a demo.
It had 12 hours on it..... I work part time in an apple orchard that has had a line up of Grasshopper mowers. 721D, 225,725, 729 big block, etc. The two 729's were the only new ones they bought.
They are still going strong even after I retired. We had other brands of so called high quality mowers and Skagg was it's only competition. I was putting 30+ hours a week on them in VERY rough conditions. They had front deck models except for the 225.
We mow under trees a lot. I beat the *** out of these mowers but serviced them regularly. They had thousands of hours on them when junked or sold when they were getting to expensive to keep them reliable. The diesel had almost five thousand hours on it.
The engine came out went in another mower and is still running......... My 226V five years later has only had tune up and oil changes done to it. It has close to 300 hours on it. I mow two acres and with my old John Deere tractor lawn mower it took me about 3 hours to mow.
I have even used my 226V in the orchard if one was down and two of us needed to mow because of time and weather issues.
The 226V only takes 45 minutes to do the same two acres and keeps right up with the 729's if we are just mowing yards . The 9 mph mowing speed is rough on my back and bottom but does an EXCELLENT job in dry grass at that speed.

One year old two problems
1. Choke cable will not engage the choke I have to manually assistant on the side of the carburetor, has been to dealer one time to be repaired they did not fix it.
2.
Kohler engine will not start I believe the fuel pump is out but my dealer mechanic said the fuel pumps never go out and is unwilling to come to my house to assist.
I am a 61-year-old man who cannot push this machine onto the trailer to take it to the shop, I do not know what I am going to do but I am very very dissatisfied with the dealer. This is the second grasshopper I have on the first one I bought from Pioneer and they treated me like a king never had a problem with it in 25 years of service gave it to my son the new one I bought I feel like it is not the same quality Of the first one I bought but if I had a dealer I’m sure it can be worked out any help that you can give me in this matter would be greatly appreciated
PTO belt keeps burning or coming off
I got this mower used in 2011. From 2011 to 2018, I used this mower to low about 5 acres once a week with no problems whatsoever.
Over the winter of 2017/2018, the mower wouldn't start so I took it to the dealer in the spring of 2018. I got it back and it was fine until about the 2nd time I mowed when the belt broke. First time the belt had been replaced in all those years. I went to the dealer and bought a new belt for $130 and changed it myself....(I'm a woman who has no mechanical experience).
I finally got the belt on and started to mow and about halfway through mowing...the belt broke again. I didn't even get to finish mowing. I was ticked and couldn't afford another belt at that Priya. I looked online and found the same model number belt on eBay for $15.
I ordered two. During the summer of 2018, I had to replace the belt 6 times. I won't take it back to the dealer because they are notorious for screwing people over. They almost ruined my Mahindra tractor because they didn't put any coolant back in the radiator after draining it.
Now it's time to mow again and my PTO belt keeps popping off to where it will come out of the pulley that sits behind the belt clutch and then off the tensioner pulley. I'll put it back on and make about 10 or 15 passes and off it comes again. I've called it every name in the book and probably a few words I've invented. I don't know how to fix this.
I'm putting the belt on right. The pulleys are not bent or dirty. All pulleys turn freely except for the one behind the belt clutch. That one won't budge when the mower is off.
Could the clutch be going out? Also, when I put the mower in reverse, the blades will dig into the ground. I have it set on a 4" cut. I'm kind of ignorant on what the parts are called so if you reply...act like you're talking to an idiot and explain it that way.
Lol. Thanks in advance

I wrote this negative review and need to update. Grasshopper contacted me immediately and cleared everything up and was extremely cordial about it.
I was mistaken , said negative things and was wrong given more iinformation.
Thank you for being the company i was hoping you were. Russ Haley
Hello. I believe we spoke yesterday (June 17, 2021).
Just wanted to close the loop here on this thread. The order for the parts was submitted by the servicing dealer on June 15, and the parts were shipped from our warehouse the same day. The shipment was delivered to the dealer on June 17. While we understand the impact to your business for the time the mower was out of service, we did fulfill the order for parts in a timely fashion -- once we received the order from the dealer.
Let us know if we can be of further assistance in the future. - MS
We would love further assistance...mower back in shop 10 times first season. That is 20 weeks without your junk mower and no one knows how to repair it and not even offer a mower replacement nothing.
Just sit and wait on you to learn on my mower .
I am paying for all this. So let's go to court since you won't listen or correct this issue...I have lots of time with your mower
Mr. Haley, From the time of your 8/19/21 comment on this thread, Grasshopper has stood behind your mower's 3-year / 1,250-hour limited commercial warranty by replacing two idlers (one being the most recent issue) as well as an LED work light.
You purchased the machine in November 2020, so you have nearly two years of warranty coverage remaining; you have logged 400+ hours in the first year of ownership. Furthermore, the Grasshopper factory technical and customer service departments have continued to take your calls and respond to your messages, and Grasshopper is committed to thorough and responsive customer service and technical support for you in the future. Based on other posts and comments you and/or your associates have recently made elsewhere on this forum, we understand that you continue to experience an issue with the Kohler engine on your mower. As has been previously communicated, the engine warranty is offered by Kohler and any/all warranty claims will be approved and processed by Kohler, at the sole discretion of Kohler.
Your dealer has been and continues to be in direct communication with Kohler, yet despite multiple attempts at different times by the dealer to replicate the issue -- including spending half a day mowing with the unit -- they have been unable to do so, thus Kohler is still considering the next course of action. While we can understand the frustration this may cause, the ultimate decision there will come from Kohler. At this point, every service-related issue has been -- or continues to be -- processed in accordance with specified warranty procedures in a timely manner by the dealer, Grasshopper and/or Kohler, respectively. P.S.
Regarding a replacement mower during service time(s), it is at the dealers' discretion to offer loaner mowers for commercial operators. As is the case for any business, large or small, it is the responsibility of the business owner to plan for contingencies. According to your dealer, this Grasshopper mower is the sole operating unit for your mowing business.
If that is the case, we strongly encourage you to plan ahead in the event of future service-related issues, either with your dealer regarding a loaner mower or by acquiring secondary equipment. - MS
